About Turnitin：

Turnitin helps patrons use references appropriately and improve their paraphrasing and citation skills. With users in approximately 180 countries worldwide, Turnitin has an active user base of nearly 30 million educators and students. Turnitin provides a reliable plagiarism detection service that detects and compares inappropriate citations or potential plagiarism in submitted papers. Turnitin can be accessed through a password-based login.

Authorization of Account and how to access:

1. To standardize the management and use of Turnitin, the library will only create instructor accounts for faculty, teaching professors, research professors. Please send your university email address and name to librarian (lib-turnitin@sustech.edu.cn). Once opened, an automatic email will be sent by Turnitin containing an activation link.

2. Detection for Dissertation. The library authorizes the Graduate School and Teaching Affairs Office to create instructor accounts for secretaries of the schools and departments, who will be responsible for helping plagiarism detection of dissertations.
3. Detection for Course Assignment. Given that the subscription fee of Turnitin is directly related to the number of user accounts, on the premise of prioritizing the plagiarism detection of English dissertations, the library will create accounts for faculty to a certain extent based on the number of surplus accounts for the plagiarism detection of course assignmentsthat are not coordinated by the Graduate School or Teaching Affairs Office.
4. Creating student accounts. If students need plagiarism detection for journal submission, please contact their supervisors; If students need plagiarism detection for course assignments, please contact instructor of the course. According to management procedure of Turnitin, a class need to be created in the instructor account of Turnitin, and then a student account will be created for the student.

How to use Turnitin:

1. Turnitin's comparison database mainly consists of various English databases. Therefore, to ensure the reliability of plagiarism detection results, it is not recommended to use Turnitin for checking Chinese papers.

2. To avoid mistakenly uploading articles to Turnitin's comparison database, Turnitin instructors could select No Repository in “Edit assignment settings”.

3. If a submitted article is accidentally added to the comparison database, please select the record in Turnitin and click on ‘Permanent deletion request' to request deletion and then contact the administrator to have it removed from the database. Please note that patrons can only delete submitted records, not papers that have already been added to the database.
