About Turnitin：

Turnitin helps patrons use references appropriately and improve their paraphrasing and citation skills. With users in approximately 180 countries worldwide, Turnitin has an active user base of nearly 30 million educators and students. Turnitin provides a reliable plagiarism detection service that detects and compares inappropriate citations or potential plagiarism in submitted papers. Turnitin can be accessed through a password-based login.

Authorization of Account and how to access:

1. To standardize the management and use of Turnitin, the library will only create instructor accounts for faculty, teaching professors, research professors. Please send your university email address and name to librarian (lib-turnitin@sustech.edu.cn). Once opened, an automatic email will be sent by Turnitin containing an activation link.

2. Detection for Dissertation. The library authorizes the Graduate School and Teaching Affairs Office to create instructor accounts for secretaries of the schools and departments, who will be responsible for helping plagiarism detection of dissertations.
3. Detection for Course Assignment. Given that the subscription fee of Turnitin is directly related to the number of user accounts, on the premise of prioritizing the plagiarism detection of English dissertations, the library will create accounts for faculty to a certain extent based on the number of surplus accounts for the plagiarism detection of course assignmentsthat are not coordinated by the Graduate School or Teaching Affairs Office.
4. Creating student accounts. If students need plagiarism detection for journal submission, please contact their supervisors; If students need plagiarism detection for course assignments, please contact instructor of the course. According to management procedure of Turnitin, a class need to be created in the instructor account of Turnitin, and then a student account will be created for the student.

How to use Turnitin:

1. Turnitin's comparison database mainly consists of various English databases. Therefore, to ensure the reliability of plagiarism detection results, it is not recommended to use Turnitin for checking Chinese papers.

2. To avoid mistakenly uploading articles to Turnitin's comparison database, Turnitin instructors could select No Repository in “Edit assignment settings”.

3. If a submitted article is accidentally added to the comparison database, please select the record in Turnitin and click on ‘Permanent deletion request' to request deletion and then contact the administrator to have it removed from the database. Please note that patrons can only delete submitted records, not papers that have already been added to the database.

Feature Introduction

Turnitin AI writing detection capability is designed to help educators identify text that might be generated by a generative AI tool, such as large language models, chatbots, word spinners, and bypasser tools.

The AI Writing Detection Report and Similarity Report are available on the same platform. When you open the Similarity Report, the AI Writing indicator appears in the toolbar on the right-side panel. To open the AI Writing Report, select the AI percentage displayed in the indicator.

The AI Writing Detection Report includes:

1.Overall percentage detected as AI (%)

It indicates the percentage of qualifying text within the submitted document that Turnitin AI writing detection model determines could be generated by AI.

2.Submission Breakdown

The overall percentage of text likely detected as AI is detailed in the Submission Breakdown. AI-generated content detection identifies qualifying text that was likely generated by a large language model (LLM). It can also identify text that was likely AI-generated but subsequently modified using an AI bypasser, AI-paraphrasing tool, or AI word spinner, such as Quillbott. Detected text is highlighted in blue in the submission breakdown bar and in the submission.

Important Notes

1.The detection score does not indicate academic misconduct. It should not be used as the sole basis for taking action against a student or as the final grading criterion.

2.To reduce the risk of false positives, AI detection scores between 1% and 19% are not displayed as a percentage and the corresponding text is not highlighted. Instead, an asterisk (*%) is shown.

3.Currently, AI Writing Detection results are visible only to instructors.

4.In order for a submission to generate an AI writing report and percentage, the submission needs to meet the following requirements:

·File size must be less than 100 MB

·File must have at least 300 words of prose text in a long-form writing format

·File must not exceed 30,000 words

·File must be written in English

·Accepted file types: .docx, .pdf, .txt, .rtf
