Feature Introduction
Turnitin AI writing detection capability is designed to help educators identify text that might be generated by a generative AI tool, such as large language models, chatbots, word spinners, and bypasser tools.
The AI Writing Detection Report and Similarity Report are available on the same platform. When you open the Similarity Report, the AI Writing indicator appears in the toolbar on the right-side panel. To open the AI Writing Report, select the AI percentage displayed in the indicator.
The AI Writing Detection Report includes:
1、Overall percentage detected as AI (%)
It indicates the percentage of qualifying text within the submitted document that Turnitin AI writing detection model determines could be generated by AI.
2、Submission Breakdown
The overall percentage of text likely detected as AI is detailed in the Submission Breakdown. AI-generated content detection identifies qualifying text that was likely generated by a large language model (LLM). It can also identify text that was likely AI-generated but subsequently modified using an AI bypasser, AI-paraphrasing tool, or AI word spinner, such as Quillbott.Detected text is highlighted in bluein the submission breakdown bar and in the submission.
Important Notes
1、The detection score does not indicate academic misconduct. It should not be used as the sole basis for taking action against a student or as the final grading criterion.
2、To reduce the risk of false positives, AI detection scores between 1% and 19% are not displayed as a percentage and the corresponding text is not highlighted. Instead, an asterisk (*%) is shown.
3、Currently, AI Writing Detection results are visible only to instructors.
4、In order for a submission to generate an AI writing report and percentage, the submission needs to meet the following requirements:
- File size must be less than 100 MB
- File must have at least 300 words of prose text in a long-form writing format
- File must not exceed 30,000 words
- File must be written in English
- Accepted file types: .docx, .pdf, .txt, .rtf
